Dogecoin (DOGE) is a cryptocurrency created as a funny, lighthearted take on altcoins following their growing popularity in 2013.

Based on the iconic “Doge” Internet meme, Dogecoin features a Shiba Inu on its logo and was first introduced as a ‘joke’ asset by its developers, which forked Litecoin to create an asset with a larger inflationary supply.

Dogecoin uses the same peer-to-peer, decentralised model that Bitcoin and Litecoin use but quickly grew into the space by forming devoted online communities on social media and Reddit.

Following its popularity within the internet space,  further use-cases including tipping and eCommerce payments for merchants were introduced to make DOGE usage more widespread through the crypto space. The token then drew the attention of Elon Musk, who adopted the token in his social media posts by creating memes and tweeting regularly about Dogecoin.

Since then, DOGE has retained its status as one of the most widely recognisable assets in the industry despite its status as a parody ‘meme’ token. Now, DOGE is one of the larger cryptocurrencies by market cap despite its heavily inflated, limitless supply of tokens
