That was the highest price for gold since November 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102-1024x363.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102-1024x363.png 1024w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102-300x106.png 300w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102-150x53.png 150w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102-768x272.png 768w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-102.png 1111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gold (KAU) price &#8211; $\/g &#8211; on the Kinesis Pro exchange<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The US dollar fell sharply against other major currencies on Monday and Tuesday. This tends to put upward pressure on dollar-denominated assets like gold, as it makes the precious metal cheaper for buyers in other currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-potential-us-tariffs-seen-as-inflationary\">Potential US tariffs seen as inflationary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The gold markets were also weighing potentially bearish elements for prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inauguration of US President Donald Trump on Monday has focused minds on the possibility of trade tariffs materialising, which are seen as inflationary, potentially limiting the US Fed\u2019s leeway to cut interest rates further. Trump has already threatened 25% tariffs within days for Mexico and Canada, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday to warn that Canada will respond if the US goes ahead with tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-market-positioning\">Market positioning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, gold-backed ETFs saw net inflows of 19 tonnes in the week to January 17<sup>th<\/sup>, of which 15.9 tonnes were from Europe, according to World Gold Council figures updated January 20<sup>th<\/sup>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gold.org\/goldhub\/data\/gold-etfs-holdings-and-flows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Gold ETF: Stock, Holdings and Flows<\/a>.\u00a0 The latest figure compares with net inflows of 5.9 tonnes in the week to January 10<sup>th<\/sup> and net outflows of 3.2 tonnes in the week to January 3<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, open interest in gold futures contracts on exchanges rose to $189.8 billion in the week to January 17<sup>th<\/sup>, rising for the third straight week. The figure compares with $172.5 billion in the week to January 10<sup>th<\/sup>. The level of open interest is now close to its 2024 peak of $194.4 billion seen in the week to October 25<sup>th<\/sup>, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-upcoming-data-events\">Upcoming data\/events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring a planned speech by ECB President Christine Lagarde, which may provide an update on the status of the EU economy and help chart the path forward for interest rates by the central bank.
