{"id":103231,"date":"2023-11-21T08:41:34","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T08:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/?p=103231"},"modified":"2023-11-27T08:44:58","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T08:44:58","slug":"the-role-of-precious-metals-in-currency-devaluation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/es\/blog\/gold\/the-role-of-precious-metals-in-currency-devaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Precious Metals in Currency Devaluation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over a long enough time frame, the purchasing power of almost all fiat currencies has fallen dramatically, especially when compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gold<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img width=\"912\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fiat-relative-to-gold.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-103248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fiat-relative-to-gold.png 912w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fiat-relative-to-gold-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fiat-relative-to-gold-150x66.png 150w, https:\/\/kinesis.money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fiat-relative-to-gold-768x339.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: World Gold Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This chart shows the relative value of some of the major global fiat currencies over the last twenty years and it might be something of an eye-opener to those that don&#8217;t fully consider fiat money held in the bank an investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several reasons that currencies start to become worth less over time, but it mostly hinges upon the fact that more can be created or \u201cprinted\u201d at any given time, and the currencies\u2019 lack intrinsic or even extrinsic value &#8211; bills only carry value because society trusts the central banks that tell us that they do and general members of society accept this as true!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Dollar was, at one point in time, tied to the value of gold, but that was many decades ago: until January 1934 dollars could be redeemed for gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, several countries have seen their currencies collapse, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Argentina &#8211; the Argentine peso has collapsed no less than five times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brazil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hungary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indonesia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Israel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mexico<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peru<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Philippines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Korea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;and Turkey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, the currencies of Venezuela and Zimbabwe have seen their value plummet, becoming worth next to nothing. In Zimbabwe\u2019s case, this was due to \u201cHyperinflation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Against the dollar, some of these currencies have lost 90 (Turkish Lira) -99.9% (Venezeulean Bolivar) of their value in the past two decades, give or take.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-currency-devaluation-and-its-implications\"><strong>Currency Devaluation and Its Implications<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currency devaluation has always occurred, but recent economic interest and monetary policy have shone a new light upon it and its implications. If a currency is losing value, that implies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>#1 Economic mismanagement &#8211; loss of confidence in a currency as a result of bad monetary policy can affect a currency very negatively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>#2 Political instability &#8211; times of great political turmoil and division also impact currencies negatively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>#3&nbsp; Speculation &#8211; considerable in and outflows of capital are bandied around by speculators who can impact prices with large buy and sell orders&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors can expect that the reverse of these situations would be true in most cases. Source: https:\/\/kinesis.money\/gold-price\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider that the <a href=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/gold-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">price of gold<\/a> and silver doesn\u2019t actually rise: it just costs more of your fiat currency to buy them. When you understand this, you\u2019ll see why it looks like gold and silver have been growing exponentially for many years now, as &#8211; especially in silver\u2019s case &#8211; demand heavily outweighs supply of these precious metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It consistently costs more dollars over time to buy gold, though that is not to say gold prices never go down; they do, usually as a result of macroeconomic and geopolitical events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no reason to expect that gold will not continue to be an excellent investment thanks to its intrinsic value and fundamental use cases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic Factors and Currency Devaluation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the implications discussed earlier, there are several economic factors that could combine to drive currency devaluation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/blog\/precious-metals\/what-is-inflation-how-to-protect-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Inflation<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211; <\/strong>as seen across the globe currently, years of <a href=\"https:\/\/kinesis.money\/blog\/what-are-five-causes-of-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">printing money<\/a> with reckless abandon has led to rampant inflation and what\u2019s being called a \u201ccost of living crisis\u201d. As the prices of goods and services increase, local currencies become less valuable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trade deficits &#8211; <\/strong>typical supply and demand are at play here: if a country is importing a lot more than it is exporting, this can negatively impact the local currency as there is seen to be a lack of demand. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Economic sanctions &#8211; <\/strong>as seen with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, economic sanctions around trade and financing can be deployed with potentially devastating impact, harming a country&#8217;s currency and its ability to sustain itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Government debt &#8211; <\/strong>as seen with the US government&#8217;s recent increase to the debt ceiling &#8211; allowing for unlimited borrowing &#8211; printing more money to service the high levels of debt interest can have a long-term negative impact on a country\u2019s currency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Central bank policy &#8211; <\/strong>hikes and cuts to interest rates, for example, impact the value of prices across most if not all assets.
